I’ve been reading

I just finished reading a can’t-put-it-down book in 24 hours. I cut into blogging and sleep time because I could not stop. That’s how much I was into it!

This happens to be one of the best feelings in the world. For me.

I love to get lost in a totally different world. A different era, new friends, breathtaking plots, intricate relationships, cautious moves, impossible romance, crime solving, and more…

The book in question? Twilight.

I know, it’s probably not the best novel of all times, but I finally wanted to know what the buzz was all about and I borrowed this book from a friend — that one and the next in the series. Highly entertaining, so it was perfect for me!

Which means? I have a lot more reading to do, though I’m already half-way through the second one. And I’m told there are two more books to the series, so this will be a busy week!

I’m thinking about starting a dedicated page on this blog about what I’m reading to keep tab and get some insight too.

What books shall I read next? (Remember it has to be compelling enough to compete with what’s left of my sleep after blogging!)

It's so good to have you back! Share your thoughts, I LOVE comments!

  • I was put f reading the Twilight books for a long time because of all the hype.

I even didn’t manage to watch the whole of the first film first time around to which my eldest daughter said “Here mom try the books because they are so much better than the film”. She was totally right all four books are totally captivating, I whizzed through them in about a week.

Since then I’ve enjoyed all the films even though as usual they are not totally consistent with the books. What strikes me is exactly how much they will have to change in book four in order to make an acceptable film for the censors to get the age rating that they need for their target audience.

Three totally engrossing books which come to mind for me from a genre that I don’t normally read would be:

A piece of cake – Cupcake Brown
My Sisters Keeper – Jodi Picoult
    Chocolat – Joanne Harris

None of them are new but they are well worth a read just because you get totally drawn into somebody else’s world, worlds which are not necessarily pleasant but they do stop and make you think!

Sounds fantastic! I did see the movie of book #3 but will still pick it up — the movie though did nothing for me…

Yes, the Twilight books are quite captivating. And that’s why I am enjoying #2 right, though come on, where is the vampire?? Half way through and wondering where it’s going… but I know there are 2 more books, so it must be getting better at some point ;)

      Thanks again for the recommendations!

I have not been much of a “reader” since childhood. But, I have been doing some reading recently, and I have found that I really love a book I can’t put down. And, when it’s over…. I’m a little sad because I wish there were more to the story. I find myself carrying books around long after I have finished them, so I can go back and reread chapters or passages.

My sister got me into Emily Giffin’s books (Love the One You’re With, Baby Proof, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Matters of the Heart) and I loved them!
Also I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain. From dog lover to dog lover, I highly recommend this book to you (perhaps you have read it?). It is written from a dog’s perspective.

Do you have any suggested reading besides Twilight (which has been suggested to me by many, but I have thus far resisted the urge to be sucked in because I know it will consume weeks of my life!)?

I had not heard of these books, yet! Thrilled to get so many ideas! Thanks for stopping by.

Do you read Paul Auster? He is just amazing, and for another dog’s prospective, I highly recommend Timbuktu!

I have a hard time defining his genre, he is so… unique. Hope you enjoy him!

Also, I read a lot in French, don’t know if the trilogy by Marie Laberge is available in English, you get hooked from the first pages… The first book is called Gabrielle, Le Gout du Bonheur (A taste of happiness).

  • Oh no…the Twilight books? Part of me just died.

    kidding. sort of.

You should check out my book blog. I (and nine others) frequently post about what we are reading. Maybe you’ll find something you like there. http://katiesbookcase.wordpress.com

The Twilight books make you cringe? Surely we aren’t the targeted audience (though I’m told things spice up in book #4), but it is quite entertaining. Sometimes that’s all I need!
I did check your bookshelf and I love the concept! Can I apply to participate? I could send you an essay if you are interested in finding new contributors!
And of course I will happily refer to your reviews for my next read — after the Twilight series that is ;)
      So, do you forgive me?

  • I too was introduced to the Twilight series a few years ago. I was very, very reluctant to even start it. After falling into peer pressure, I was hooked. I couldn’t put them down. Like an addict, as soon as I was done with one book, I hurried to try and get the next. I even dragged my, then 1 year old, daughter to Target in the early evening to purchase the next book. Did I mention I was also months into my pregnancy? I even read a few of the books more than once. I’d read them to stay away while breastfeeding. LOL!

  • I haven’t read the Twilight series, but I’ve seen the movie. Currently reading Allison Win Scotch’s “Time of Your Life” which is another guilty pleasure. Not exactly great literature, but so fun to read.

  • I can’t say I loved the Twilight series but BUT I read each one non-stop. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. And for that I think the author deserves some credit.
Arrange for child care when you pick up the next ones. That’s my best advice.

So far, I am completely with you. I’ve been hooked since I started and I feel so bad I’d rather read than post on my own blog these days!!!!
Sure there is better literature out there, but I could not agree more, re: the addictive factor. I am also quite interested in understanding how the author does it. I’m intrigued.

These days I get to read at night when my son is in bed, so about 8 until… I drop. Usually just around 1am!!

  • If you like the Twilight series, you MUST read “The Hunger Games” series. Another teen fiction series, but as good as, if not better than “Twilight”. A friend recommended the series and it took me two attempts to read Hunger Games, but the entire series is wonderful.

I’m intrigued, and worried too. How many books?
I’m already on to #3 and I think I might finish by the end of the week end.

Will attempt to recover some sleep before going on another running marathon :)

  • I haven’t had a chance to read any books lately…:( I’d love to again (love mystery books), it’s just I feel like by the time the kids off to bed (around 8), I have no more energy :-) So sorry I don’t have any book suggestion.

I felt the same way lately, my reading episodes are VERY sporadic. But then I grew tired of magazines and blogs, for a short while, and picked up a book. I did not realize then that it was 1 of 4! No going back now, I got sucked into it!

I know the after 8pm feeling, but when a book is that entertaining/intriguing/well written you just get back to it, automatically.
Actually it’s better, you are looking forward to the next time you will be picking it up!

So go ahead and grab a book, a chapter a day. You can do it. I’ve read good mystery books not too long ago, but in French, will need to find you some recommendations!

  • I have heard so much on this series. And that I would love it. I can’t believe that I would, but this post has convinced me to at least try.

    Excellent persuasive speech! xo

I’ve been browsing your blog for a bit now (love it by the way, as a fellow Frenchie abroad I can relate to many of your posts) but was always too timid to post. I absolutely love reading and thought I’d add some of my own recommendations… If you enjoyed the Twilight series, I recently read “The Host” from the same author. It’s slightly strange at the beginning but it definitely captures you and becomes hard to put down. One of my favorite others for light reading is Marc Levy. I always enjoy his books. He’s a French author. You might have read his books before. I don’t know if his books are available in English, I’ve always only read them in French. My favorite ones are “Sept jours pour une éternité…” and “La Prochaine Fois” :D Now for my all time favorite book, a classic, “Le Comte de Monte Cristo”… I just finished reading it for the second time, and I still had a hard time putting it down. It was just as great as the first time! If you haven’t read it yet, you really should. It’s quite long, so it’ll keep you entertained for a while ;)
