There is one fundamental difference between my husband and I.
R loves to spend money, and I like to save it.
Or at least, I avoid wasting it.
And wasting resources such as energy is clearly a waste of money; all right, say I am a nag, but I cannot stand:
- having water running for no good reason (R: “you mean, I have to turn the water off in between drying off my wine glasses?”),
- seeing the door of the refrigerator left open while the culprit is roaming around in the kitchen;
- and maybe worst of all — why, tell me why you hand me enough paper towels to clean a BP oil spill, when all I asked for was a napkin?
And so this week, Venga needed a check-up visit at the vet, so I sent R with a memo showing the cost of her medications from a well-known web site that sells them for less — much less. “If they can’t price-match, then all we need is a prescription and we shall order ourselves.”
For the record, I’ve asked my husband a million times to stop enhancing the dog’s dry food with shredded mozzarella and pepperoni.
At restaurants, I’ve also asked him to please refrain from ordering special appetizers to take home for the dog. My husband routinely orders food for the dog, yes.
Unfortunately: He. Just. Won’t. Listen.
Anyways: My husband got ripped off with talent at the vet’s office — so much so, that he did not even notice!
And I did not see it coming…
Office visit $58
A couple vaccines, a parasite screening or two $198.99
Flea & tick, heartworm prevention medicine $165.35
More meds (poor Venga! We’re told she has summer allergies) $111.80
Patient Total: $534.14
FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY DOLLARS.
We love this silly French dog of ours. Five hundred dollars later, no doubt, we love her even more.
By the way, the vet said she could loose a few pounds — guess who is always right?
Both R and Venga are now on a diet!
Are we crazy or just prisoners of the system? What’s the most amount of money you’ve spent on your dog?
It's so good to have you back! Share your thoughts, I LOVE comments!

This is a GREAT post! The most amount of money we have spent on our dogs, you ask? Oh my goodness. Perhaps if we downsized our dogs our vet bills would be better. But TWO great Danes equals $$$$ vet visits. Especially when one of them decides to eat a stuffed object not meant for digestion, has major surgery, then gets sent to the ER vet for further monitoring. And this whole thing happens TWICE in three months. Let’s just say our bills equaled…gulp…thousands. But we love them. And they love when R comes over and feeds them leftover scraps from his plate. We also buy our frontline and heartguard online to save some money. Smart move to do this. How much do we love our dogs, you ask? A whole heck of a lot. They may be obnoxious, small ponies walking around the house but they bring something special to our home. Without them, it wouldn’t be the same!
Our puppy, Gizmo, had to get some of his teeth pulled early, and that cost us a pretty penny. For these types of things, there’s nothing we can do to negotiate or lower the price. But, for things like medications and such, if you can get them cheap why the heck wouldn’t you? If the answer is convenience, I don’t believe it because 1-800-Pet-Meds will deliver right to your doorstep.
Anyways, I love Gizmo – he’s a part of the family.
Thanks for the comment on my blog, by the way. All the best to you, R & V!
If only my husband had listened to you and me, petmeds would have delivered today. Sigh.
Long life to Gizmo, he’s a cutie by the way
When you welcome a pet into the family, I believe you commit to their health and well-being. Casey the Dog has had only one serious mishap that required a high-dollar fix. (For those with queasy stomachs, stop reading HERE.) My husband took her on a trail run and she ran into a stick, which impaled her cheek millimeters from her left eye! That added up.
But I have to admit that as a deep down cat person, my greatest expenses were for my dear old cat, who has now passed. From the age of 7, she saw a cardiologist in addition to her regular vet for a heart condition. The yearly ECG was $600, with monthly medications at about $30 (that was from the discount online pharmacy.) Secret: I would have paid even more to keep that furry little thing purring happily beside me every morning!
Oh Michele, sorry for the loss of your cat. When we lived at the farm, the little girl I was then cried a few well-loved cats. I miss having a cat, but Venga is not one to share. Not with a prey!
Did the vet prescribe mo more trail running for the dog? Or on the contrary, encouraged it so you guys would visit the office again, eheh!
WOW, I’ve never spent that much on my dogs. Not even when they got fixed. Damn, I hate to say it, but I think the vet took your husband for a ride.
And for the record, I hate it when lights are left on. By the one person in the house who swears he always turns them off. Um, yea, that’s me following behind you, turning them off.

Allison, you are welcome to my house any day, we will save my home hundreds of dollars a month on our energy bills.
My husband is so in love with our dog he did not realize his wallet is $500 lighter. He keeps telling me: “Look how happy she is, she looks much healthier now”.
I don’t have the heart to contradict him.
Oh my! Can I relate to this! Vets are so expensive and I think they make a bundle on all the meds and shampoos and food! I finally found zooplus.com to buy food in “bulk” and have it delivered!
With 2 German Shepherds, I think some days their meals are more expensive than ours!
Great to discover your blog!
Let’s stay in touch, maybe I can send you some Brie!
Cheers,
Andree
Brie and Roquefort are daily staples at my house! I used to have my family mail me cheese when I lived in England and Denmark. I have now found some specialty shops in the US that I can my French fixes from

Glad you enjoy my blog — my dog is a French herding dog, isn’t she gorgeous? Her breed is called “Beauceron” as in Beautiful
I cannot get over your own blog — your pictures are nothing short of stunning. My son and I love zebras, I need to have a large print made from one of your amazing shots. You’re good! No, you’re gifted.
Vets are so expensive, I had a friend who’s hamster got ill, don’t know what was wrong with him but it turned out he needed surgery, my friends mum ended up paying almost £100 for the hamster who then died about a week later. The thing’s we’ll do for our pet hey!
I know If our dog needed it we’d cough up the money, Fig is part of our family

One hundred quids for the little hamster, so sad he could not be saved!
You’re quite right that our pets are just like family members. Anything to keep them healthy. Fig is a really good name by the way!
Yikes! That’s pricey for sure. But yeah, those vet visits can be really costly huh. Our old poor dog, Elvis was sick with epilepsy and it cost us almost $100 just for his medications alone for 2 weeks. I totally love this post hahahaha your husband loves that dog a.lot!

You’re are quite right, maybe that was the hidden purpose of this post — show the world that my husband is madly in love with Venga!
Maryline,
Great post! I am a mother of the 4-legged variety!
I’m your husband in our situation! I sucker for whatever they say my “babies” need
Much to my Hubs chagrin… Great blog by the way. I found you over the blogfrog/#31DBBB boards. Hope you’ll stop by if you have a chance!
