Cultural gap becomes abyss

Have you heard about the documentary called “God grew tired of us”?

As I was researching my topic of choice in more depth (on YouTube, where else!?), I stumbled upon this mind-blowing clip; worth a watch, believe me.

(Note of Warning, the sound is not of great quality and seems higher than the norm! Adjust your settings accordingly!)

I selected this clip over the trailer for the movie because it highlighted perfectly some of the key differences that other populations may see between them and others (community rules, personal space, etc.), but at greater levels. It also shows how preconceived notions are formed and can hurt people’s feeling.

Finally it shows the distress and apprehension of these young men as they prepare for their new life — can you adapt when you are so different?

Makes my “cultural hiccups” look silly in comparison!

To find out how they made out, I ordered the movie on Ebay; and we just got it in!!

Can’t wait to watch it and report back!

Tell me: When it comes to cultural differences, what is your go-to movie? (If you answer “Lost in Translation”, please explain to me why this movie was such a hit; I really, really did NOT get it at all. Bummer!)

  • Loved that clip, and feel for that young man. It wasn’t surprising to me having lived in Ghana, West Africa where people talk to each other in the street and are friendly. Here is an example:

I had broken my leg and was in a cast up to my thigh. I was sitting in the back of our parked car waiting for my husband to run into a store for something. A (Ghanaian)woman I didn’t know, walked by and noticed me and my fancy leg stretched out on the backseat. She stopped, stuck her head in the window and said: “Oh, Madame! I am so sorry! I will pray for you!”

My favorite movie about cultural differences is an old one, hilarious:
The Gods Must Be Crazy 1. There’s also The Gods Must Be Crazy 2, also funny. Doesn’t deal with immigrants coming to the North America or Europe, which is a difficult adjustment and culture shock issue for most of them. I’ll see if I can find the documentary God Grew Tired of Us.
